The ferries leave from the port, providing links between Sweden and Germany. The earliest written record of Trelleborg dates back to 1257 when the Danish royal family gave Trelleborg to Sweden as a wedding gift. Soon after, it was returned to the Danes and remained in their possession until 1658. In medieval times, Trelleborg played an important part in the herring fishing industry along the entire coast of Sweden. The herring shoals were so abundant that fishermen were said to have been able to stand on the shore and catch fish using nets! Trelleborg became an important merchant city for the herring trade, but in 1619, following a devastating fire, the Danish King decided that one merchant city on the coast was sufficient, and revoked Trelleborg's status in favor of Malmö.
